Our staff have been thanked for taking swift action after discovering fake games consoles which could have put lives at risk over Christmas.

Hundreds of imported counterfeit Nintendo DS and DS Lites were found to have been supplied with potentially dangerous power adaptors after being confiscated from UK freight depots.

Retailing at around £60 less than the usual selling price, they had been bought from websites, mainly based in Asia, which had claimed they were genuine Nintendo products.

The consoles were first spotted by sharp-eyed Bernie Rafferty a UK Border Agency officer, working at a DHL depot in Leeds, who called in Nintendo to confirm his suspicions.

Nintendo proved they were fakes and said the power adaptors supplied with them had not been electronically tested and did not meet strict UK safety standards.

Our officers quickly alerted all UK import postal hubs for incoming Royal Mail and Courier packages, to be on the lookout for any parcels mainly from Asia. This resulted in further seizures across the UK of this potentially lethal product.

Mike Rawlinson, managing director of the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association - which represents the UK games industry - said:

"We would like to thank the UK Border Agency for their role in swiftly alerting all UK ports to be on their guard for similar counterfeit goods coming into the country."

Pamela Rogers, head of HM Revenue and Custom's Intellectual Property Rights, added:

"At best, these consoles would have led to disappointment on Christmas morning; at worst, they could have caused serious harm or injury.

"Counterfeit goods cause considerable damage to the UK economy by undermining genuine UK retailers and small businesses who are honest and abide by the rules."
